Somatic Therapy
Many people understand their experiences intellectually but still feel stuck in patterns of anxiety, overwhelm, tension, or emotional distress. Somatic therapy offers a way to explore healing through the connection between the mind and body, helping you develop greater awareness, regulation, and a sense of safety within yourself.
What Is Somatic Therapy?
Somatic therapy is a body-based approach that recognizes the important relationship between our thoughts, emotions, nervous system, and physical experiences.
Our bodies often hold onto experiences long after the event has passed. Trauma, chronic stress, and difficult life experiences can influence how we respond to the world, sometimes leaving us feeling constantly on edge, disconnected, overwhelmed, or unsure how to move forward.
Somatic therapy gently helps you notice and explore these patterns while building skills to support nervous system regulation, emotional balance, and a greater sense of safety.
How Somatic Therapy Can Help
Somatic therapy may be helpful if you experience:
-
Anxiety, panic, or feeling constantly "on alert"
-
Difficulty calming your mind or body
-
Emotional overwhelm or feeling easily triggered
-
The effects of past trauma or difficult experiences
-
Feeling disconnected from yourself or your emotions
-
Challenges with boundaries, self-trust, or self-compassion
-
Chronic stress, burnout, or feeling stuck in survival mode
Together, we can explore how your experiences show up in your body and develop tools that support healing and resilience.
What Does Somatic Therapy Look Like?
Somatic therapy is a gentle, collaborative process. Sessions may include:
-
Developing awareness of physical sensations, emotions, and patterns
-
Learning grounding and nervous system regulation strategies
-
Exploring the connection between thoughts, feelings, and body responses
-
Practicing mindfulness and present-moment awareness
-
Building resources that help you feel more calm, connected, and empowered
-
Integrating body-based approaches alongside other therapies such as EMDR, Internal Family Systems (IFS), ACT, CBT, and art therapy
You will always remain in control of the pace and direction of therapy. The goal is not to force yourself to revisit painful experiences, but to create greater understanding, choice, and healing.
Somatic Therapy and Trauma Healing
Trauma is not only something we remember—it can also influence how our nervous system responds today. You may notice this through physical tension, emotional reactions that feel bigger than expected, difficulty relaxing, or feeling disconnected from yourself.
Somatic approaches can be especially supportive for trauma recovery because they help address both the emotional and physiological impacts of difficult experiences.
At Inner Light Counselling, I integrate somatic approaches with trauma-informed therapies, including EMDR, to support a deeper and more holistic approach to healing.
Is Somatic Therapy Right for Me?
Somatic therapy may be a good fit if you are looking for an approach that goes beyond simply talking about your experiences. It can be especially helpful for people who feel that they understand their struggles but still feel like something is “stuck.”
Therapy can help you build a stronger relationship with yourself, understand your responses with compassion, and develop new ways of responding to life’s challenges.
